SQL Developer | Power BI | ETL

Role Summary

Developed and optimized application modules using T-SQL and MS SQL, designed automated workflows via stored procedures, and performed comprehensive database maintenance. Handled Power BI dashboard maintenance, ETL tasks, and maintained thorough documentation of all implemented solutions. Built critical data integration infrastructure connecting Bee360 application to Power BI for financial reporting.

Systems / Scope

  • Product: Bee360 enterprise PPM (Project Portfolio Management) platform
  • Stakeholders: Financial team, IT Governance team, Project Managers, Business Analysts
  • Scale: Multi-environment setup (PROD, TEST/EDU, DEV), SQL Server databases across all environments
  • Data Pipeline: Bee360 database → Power BI dashboards for business intelligence

Key Achievements

  • Developed and optimized application modules using T-SQL and MS SQL, designed workflows and automated processes via built-in configurators and stored procedures
  • Performed database maintenance including backups, dumps, wrote views, triggers, and reports (XML/HTML), ensuring data integrity and system reliability
  • Handled Power BI dashboard maintenance, ETL tasks, and testing of implemented solutions, maintaining thorough documentation of features, changes, and test results
  • Built centralized Power BI integration architecture that reduced database load and enabled unlimited dashboard creation without performance impact

Interview Stories

Power BI Integration Architecture - From Discussion to Delivery

  • Situation: The financial team needed an interface to connect Bee360 data to Power BI for reporting. Multiple departments (security, infrastructure, finance, IT) held meetings to discuss authentication, data access, security requirements, and implementation approach, but after extensive discussions, no clear solution emerged.
  • Complication: Different stakeholders had different requirements and concerns. Security needed to ensure proper access controls, infrastructure needed to understand resource requirements, and finance needed timely delivery. The discussions were going in circles without a concrete path forward.
  • Actions: I took initiative to research the technical requirements independently, studying Power BI connection methods, SQL Server authentication options, and Bee360 database structure. I designed a centralized data pipeline architecture (Bee360 DB → bee360_DATASET → all dashboards) that addressed security concerns through a single managed dataset while enabling unlimited dashboard creation. I built the complete interface solution in approximately one week, including:
    • SQL reports for bee360_DATASET creation
    • Connection guides for dashboard developers
    • Data refresh procedures and scheduling
    • Permission management documentation
    • Architecture documentation explaining the solution
  • Result: The solution has been running in production for years without issues. It reduced database load from N connections (one per dashboard) to a single daily refresh, enabling unlimited Power BI dashboard creation without performance impact. The architecture became the standard approach for all Power BI integrations with Bee360.
  • What I learned: Sometimes taking initiative to research and prototype a solution can move projects forward more effectively than extended discussions. Understanding the technical constraints and requirements firsthand enabled me to propose a solution that addressed all stakeholder concerns while delivering quickly.

Promotion to IT Engineer

  • Situation: After approximately 2.5 years as SQL Developer, I had demonstrated consistent delivery of database solutions, automation improvements, and infrastructure contributions. I had built the Power BI integration architecture, maintained comprehensive documentation, and shown ability to work independently on complex technical challenges.
  • Complication: The role transition required expanding from primarily database-focused work to broader infrastructure responsibilities including Windows Server and Ubuntu environment management, cloud infrastructure optimization, and DevOps practices.
  • Actions: I continued building on my foundation of database expertise while expanding into infrastructure automation, system management, and cloud optimization. I leveraged my experience with automation (stored procedures, ETL processes) to apply similar principles to infrastructure management.
  • Result: Successfully transitioned to IT Engineer role in January 2022, where I continued to build on database reliability work while expanding scope to infrastructure automation, cost optimization, and comprehensive system management across multiple environments.
  • What I learned: Building a strong foundation in one area (databases) while demonstrating initiative and problem-solving ability creates opportunities for role expansion. The promotion validated that technical depth combined with ownership and delivery capability is recognized and rewarded.
